Encrypt & Decrypt

FilerFrog lets you protect files with password-based RC4 encryption. Encrypted files cannot be opened without the correct password, making this a simple way to secure sensitive documents before sharing or storing them.

Encrypting Files

  1. Select the files you want to encrypt.
  2. Right-click and choose FilerFrog → Encrypt.
  3. Enter a password and confirm it.
  4. Click OK. Each file is encrypted and its extension changes to .ffenc (FilerFrog Encrypted).

The original file is replaced by the encrypted version. For example, report.pdf becomes report.pdf.ffenc.

Decrypting Files

  1. Select the .ffenc files you want to decrypt.
  2. Right-click and choose FilerFrog → Decrypt.
  3. Enter the password that was used to encrypt the files.
  4. Click OK. The files are restored to their original format.

Quick Decrypt via Double-Click

FilerFrog registers itself as the handler for .ffenc files. This means you can simply double-click any encrypted file to launch the decryption dialog — no need to right-click and navigate the context menu.

Example

Before sending confidential spreadsheets via email, select them and encrypt with a strong password. The recipient installs FilerFrog (or uses the standalone FilerFrog Decrypt tool), double-clicks the .ffenc files, enters the password, and gets the original spreadsheets back.

Tip: Choose a strong password and remember it. There is no way to recover encrypted files if you forget the password.

AES-256 Encryption

FilerFrog 3.1 uses AES-256-CBC encryption, a modern industry-standard cipher used by banks and governments. Your files are protected with a 256-bit key derived from your password using SHA-256.

Files encrypted with older versions of FilerFrog (RC4) are automatically detected and can still be decrypted — no action needed on your part.

Tip: The encrypt dialog now includes a password strength indicator that shows how strong your chosen password is. Use at least 10 characters with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols for the best protection.
